October 21st, Kenyatta Day, is a national holiday in Kenya.
Kenyatta was the first president of Kenya. To show respect
for that day, RVA does not hold classes. Instead, Multicultural
Day is celebrated. What a privilege it was to be part of that day!
The day began at 9:00 when everyone met at the chapel for the
multicultural ceremony. Most came dressed in apparel
representative of his or her country.

Many of the students came dressed for two or three countries. Though they may be American or Canadian, they are here in Kenya studying and their parents may be working in another African country.

The ceremony consisted of songs sung in many
different languages: French students in French
and Spanish students in Spanish. Titchie (elementary) students sang in English and Swahili and Korean students sang in Korean.

We were given the constant reminder that we are many parts but one in
the body of Christ. The culmination was the presentation of twenty-five flags (representing part of the countries represented here at RVA) with the beginning of each national anthem played as they entered. Here are a few:
After the ceremony the sports competition began. It was not country against country but the whole student body and staff were divided into four teams. To emphasize the theme of the day the teams were called: Black Eyes, Green Thumbs, Red Necks, and Blue Noses. Because it rained (no one complained) the games were held inside. Here are a few of them:

The day culminated with an American football game between the seniors and the staff. That was followed by fireworks on the field right in front of our house!
What a great day it was to join others as one.

What a wonderful event! You two must be overwhelmed with the mix of cultures, and obviously surrounded by a lot of love.
