Shopping - Dukas in Kijabe vs. Malls in Nairobi

A fifteen minute walk down the hill to Kijabe or an hour harrowing ride to Nairobi - those are the shopping options. Our present plan includes a once-a-month excursion (hiring a driver) into Nairobi where "nearly" everything we need and want is available. (No chocolate chips and no walnuts!) Yesterday we bought amounts of meat, rice, flour, sugar, and other staples to last a month. This particular trip there was no brown sugar in the store but today we learned how to make it by adding molasses to regular sugar.
The dukas are a bi-weekly walk. (Sometimes our indoor worker makes the trip.) There we or she can get yogurt, small bags of staples and most fresh fruits and vegetables.
The greatest difference in the two choices is the quality of the structures. You should have no trouble distinguishing between Kijabe scenes and Nairobi scenes in the pictures below.

  1. Thanks so much for keeping us updated on your life in Kenya. It certainly helps me to pray more specifically for you.

  2. I am so glad that my sister, Ellen Young, told me about your blog recently. I haven't had any contact with you in years, but I am your cousin Martha (Marty) Carpenter VanAken. I just recently retired after an accident last year that left me with some permanent injuries. So, Doug (my husband) and I travel back and forth from Tulsa, OK to our lake home, where we plan to live if we sell our house in Tulsa, and Branson, Missouri. I don't always have internet access, but I plan to keep up with you there in Africa now and am adding you and your family to my prayer list. Also, I plan to share your blog with our cousin Harold, who I saw in Branson two weeks ago. I hadn't seen him in over 50 years. My email address is: marty1256@cox.net and I am on Facebook as Marty Carpenter VanAken. Ellen has shared about you and your family with me on occasion. Was glad to see the picture of your grandchildren. Am wondering which ones belong to Eric and which ones belong to Esther. Will be praying for you as you are away from all of your family.
